BASF building better cars through chemistry

January 06, 2012 By: athony Category: Automobiles

As we mentioned yesterday, much of the technological progress of the last quarter-century went into making up for the increasing curb weight of the average vehicle. Some of the remarkcapable products BASF has developed are on the cutting edge of taking that weight away again.

Working closely with designers, engineers, collision repair centers and OEM manufacturers, BASF applies its innovative product ideas to develop lighter, safer and more energy-efficient cars. In alignment with the company’s We Create Chemistry slogan, they focus on sustaincapable development in the future of mobility and energy efficiency.

“The North American International Auto Show gives BASF with a great opportunity to showcase our innovations that will help automakers differentiate their vehicles and at the same time make the vehicles more sustaincapable and energy-efficient,” told Beate Ehle, president, Market and Business Development, BASF North America.

Among the brand new release products NAIAS attendees will find in the BASF exhibit is the world’s first full plastic wheel concept with a potential for mass production, made from an impact-resistant specialty polyamide Ultramid Structure. More than 30 percent lighter than a standard aluminum wheel, these plastic marvels could significantly lessen vehicle weight.

In addition, the company will launch in North American the Ultramid ENDURE line of plastics; so highly heat-resistant it can take the place of metal parts in automotive engines, reducing both weight and cost.

Another innovation is their material-and-weight-saving thermoplastic seat back frame, jointly developed with Faurecia, which integrates the seat frame and back panel into a single structure reducing the need for foam and simplifying the trim process.

BASF’s ULTRASIM, a Computer Aided Engineering tool helps automotive client companies create virtual prototypes utilizing optimal multiple material design that results in finished components at marked weight and cost reductions.

The company also supplies HED cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which offering higher energy density, safety and efficiency to meet the continually evolving battery systems in automotive drivetrains. In addition, BASF offers tailor-made electrolytes to the lithium battery industry.

BASF can give manufacturers a comprehensive set of innovative catalyst technologies to encapable the efficient compliance with ever tightening emission regulations, such as LEV III.

Their automotive coatings portfolio, which includes brand new release car coatings as well as automotive refinish coatings for the repair industry, is another of their lines. BASF’s modern paint processes combined with special effect pigments and technologies, result in a full-breadth of color solutions and development capabilities.

Also showcased with be a collection of BASF Polyurethane Solutions useful in countless automotive applications and components. From lightweight car body components, instrument panels, seating foam, consoles, headrests and load floors, to even their soft touch Elastoskin on the doors, BASF has a product for nearly every aspect of the modern automobile. For example, they give Cellasto Microcellular Elastomers for sound dampening and Elastollan Thermoplastic Polyurethanes for door handles.

Though not a direct supplier to the public, it is interesting to see the materials that will likely become part of the next generation of cars as well as products sure to be part of the ongoing process of lightening the American vehicle.

10 best used cars for less than $8,000

January 05, 2012 By: athony Category: Automobiles

n/a

Someone I know was telling me yesterday about their car shopping experience with a girlfriend. Their friend told the salesman she only had $5,000 to spend, and he responded, “Come over here and look at the cars on death row.” When asked why he called them that, he told they were all ready to fall apart. Ouch. Of course, there are relicapable used cars out there, but knowing which ones to look for can be difficult. That’s why the editors at Kelley Blue Book (KBB) have put together a list of their top ten picks.

“We first compiled all the used cars 2002 and brand new releaseer with a Kelley Blue Book ® Retail Value of less than $8,000 as of December 2011,” told Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “We then went through the list and handpicked the 10 used cars with the most appealing mixes of reliability, versatility and desirability, with an emphasis on track record. The vehicles on our short list offer incredible value for today’s budget-conscious car shopper.”

While there’s no guarantee that a given vehicle is availcapable in your area at the price KBB suggests, with ten to choose from, your odds are good. Here are their choices:

10. 2008 Kia Rio for $7,895
The editors note that it’s the brand new releaseest vehicle they picked, which means it’s still under factory warranty. If you’re looking for a relicapable subcompact, it might be just right for you.

9. 2004 Ford Crown Victoria for $7,970
At the opposite end of the scale from the Kia Rio is Ford’s discontinued Crown Victoria sedan. There’s a reason so many police cars have been Crown Vics. Grab one before they become a collector’s item.

8. 2003 Mazda Protege5 for $7,360
KBB’s editors say this five-door wagon makes a good daily driver, with good gas mileage, and is fun to drive to boot.

7. 2002 Toyota Tundra Standard Cab for $5,925
If you need a full-sized pickup truck, this one’s rugged and relicapable, and, as a bonus, handles well. According to KBB, “With its smooth and durcapable V8 engine, a used Tundra will return thousands of sure-footed miles.”

6. 2003 Ford Escape for $7,560
The SUV on the list, the Escape is relatively compact, making it easy to drive, while still having lots of cargo space. No wonder it’s so popular.

5. 2004 Scion xA for $7,805
An economy car, the xA handles well and is comfortcapable. Look around for one that has the options you want, and you could get a very good deal indeed.

4. 2004 Pontiac Vibe for $7,630
This compact wagon is comfortcapable, gets good mileage, and has room for passengers and cargo. Sure, it’s not a status-boosting SUV, but it gets the job done at a reasoncapable price.

3. 2002 Toyota Corolla for $6,125
KBB’s editors say the Corolla is what it’s always been, good value, relicapable and comfortcapable. The price is good, too.

2. 2002 Infiniti G20 for $5,965
An upscale version of the Sentra, KBB’s editors note that it’s likely to have more features than similar-sized cars for the same price. Their caveat? You may have trouble finding one.

1. 2004 Honda Civic for $7,970.
This compact sedan has a reputation for quality and reliability, while still being fun to drive. KBB’s editors say that, “If you have 24 hours and $8,000 to acquire some brand new release wheels, just go buy the nearest used Civic and you’re likely to enjoy many years of trouble-free transportation. Sure beats shopping on death row.

The Ford F Series Pickup tops the 20 bestselling vehicles in 2011

January 05, 2012 By: athony Category: Automobiles

n/a

Even though we are constantly plagued by the idiots who insist that rising fuel prices will crush the American truck segment as a whole, we see that once again that the two bestselling models in the US are full size trucks. The Ford F Series won by a very comfortcapable margin with 584,917 trucks sold compared to just 415,130 examples of the Chevy Silverado sold last year – a gap of almost 170,000 units. The Toyota Camry fought through a massive shot to its reputation via the unintended acceleration lawsuits to once again finish third with 308,510 sedans sold, making the Camry the bestselling car in America once again. The Nissan Altima was fourth in sales in 2011 with 268,981 sedan and coupes sold after finishing just 7th in total sales in 2010 while the Ford Escape proved to be America’s bestselling sport utility vehicle in 2011, showing up in 5th place on this year’s list with 254,293 units sold. Also, like the murmurs that the sport utility vehicle is fading away, the Escape jumped from 13th place in 2010 to 5th place in 2011 – making it the bestselling SUV in all the land.

Overall, General Motors had the most vehicles on the list of the top 20 bestselling vehicles in 2011 with six vehicles on the list – three cars, two trucks, and one SUV. Ford was second overall with four vehicles out of the top 20 with two trucks, one car and one SUV in addition to having the bestselling truck, SUV and, of course, the claim of having the nation’s bestselling vehicle. Honda had a rough year but still managed 3 of the top 20 bestselling vehicles in American with two cars and one SUV although all three of their vehicles on the list dropped on the list compared to 2010 sales. Japanese counterpart Toyota managed just two of the top 20 vehicles – although Toyota gets to take home the title of the bestselling car in America.

Korean automaker Hyundai saw their Elantra and Sonata return to the top 20 list for 2011 but both of these models increased from where they appeared on the list in 2010. Finally, Nissan, Volkswagen and the Chrysler Group each had had one representative on the list with a pair of cars from Nissan and VW while the Chrysler Group saw their Ram pickup move up two spots from where the Ram finished in 2010. Names not on the list for 2011 that were included on the 2010 list of top movers are the Toyota Prius and the Subaru Legacy – both of which can look to the impact of the Japanese disasters earlier this year as well as increased competition for the cause of their dropping out of the top 20 selling models in America.

Below is the complete list of the top 20 bestselling models in America for the 2011 model year. The number and parenthesis is the 2010 rank for the given vehicle. Congradulations to Ford Motor Company for once again offering the bestselling vehicle in America!

1 Ford F-Series Truck 584,917 (1)

Chevy Camaro takes the muscle car crown for 2nd straight year

January 05, 2012 By: athony Category: Automobiles

n/a

In December 2011, the Chevrolet Camaro was once again the bestselling muscle car in America, selling 6,754 units – an increase of 20.3% compared to the last month of 2010. This marks the 7th straight month that the Camaro has outsold the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger and out of the 12 months of 2011 – the only month where the Camaro did not win the sales battle was when the Mustang bested the Camaro by less than 400 units. Other than that month, the Chevrolet Camaro has been by far the most popular American muscle car and by year’s end, General Motors had handed out an impressive 88,249 Camaros; accounting for an 8.5% increase over the number of Chevy muscle cars sold in 2010.

The Ford Mustang moved 5,057 units last month, which brought about a decline of 7.2% compared to December 2010. Even though Ford introduced two Strengthful brand new release engines that allowed the Mustang to outperform the Camaro (while also costing less), the 3.7L V6 and 5.0L V8 were not enough to help Ford reclaim its title of having the bestselling muscle car in America. In addition to seeing a decline in year over year sales (December 2011 compared to December 2010), the Mustang also saw an overall decline in sales from the 2010 to 2011 of 4.4%. With just 70,438 units sold in 2011, the Mustang was the only one of the three American muscle cars to see a decline in sales compared to the previous year.

Last but most certainly not least is the Dodge Challenger, which continued to push forward with 3,284 beefy Mopar muscle cars sold in December 2011. This accounted for a 1% decline compared to December 2010 but more essentially, the Challenger showed positive growth with annual sales of 39,534 giving the smallest of the Big 3 a 7% increase over the 36,791 Challengers sold in 2010.

The Ford Mustang had outsold the Chevrolet Camaro (and Dodge Challenger) every single year from 1986 through 2009 but in 2010, the Camaro was the top dog in terms of muscle car sales in the US for the first time since 1985. The Camaro backed that 2010 victory with a string of very strong months in 2011 – outselling the competition through the first 5 months of the year. The Mustang battled back in June, besting the Camaro by around 400 units sold but after that, it was all Camaro. Chevy took the title for the bestselling muscle car every month from July through December and in doing so – General Motors secured their second straight title of offering America’s bestselling muscle car.

You may notice that, unlike past months, I have not told much about the Nissan 370Z. Even though the 370Z doesn’t offer the Strengthful V8 that we find in the engine lineups of the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger, the sporty design of the “Z car” puts it in direct competition with the American muscle cars. However, after finishing dead last every month in sales compared to the other three and just selling a total of 7,328 units all of last year (a decline of over 28%), I plan to omit the Nissan from future comparisons until it becomes more competitive.

Below is a list of the various articles highlighting muscle car sales over the course of the 2011 calendar year. You may notice that there is no October because when sales figures came out, I was busy covering SEMA in Las Vegas but for the sake of argument, the Camaro outsold the Mustang by a margin of 6,119 units to 4,898.

Camaro comfortably outsells Mustang, Challenger in January 2011
