BASF building better cars through chemistry

January 06, 2012 By: athony Category: Automobiles

n/a

As we mentioned yesterday, much of the technological progress of the last quarter-century went into making up for the increasing curb weight of the average vehicle. Some of the remarkcapable products BASF has developed are on the cutting edge of taking that weight away again.

Working closely with designers, engineers, collision repair centers and OEM manufacturers, BASF applies its innovative product ideas to develop lighter, safer and more energy-efficient cars. In alignment with the company’s We Create Chemistry slogan, they focus on sustaincapable development in the future of mobility and energy efficiency.

“The North American International Auto Show gives BASF with a great opportunity to showcase our innovations that will help automakers differentiate their vehicles and at the same time make the vehicles more sustaincapable and energy-efficient,” told Beate Ehle, president, Market and Business Development, BASF North America.

Among the brand new release products NAIAS attendees will find in the BASF exhibit is the world’s first full plastic wheel concept with a potential for mass production, made from an impact-resistant specialty polyamide Ultramid Structure. More than 30 percent lighter than a standard aluminum wheel, these plastic marvels could significantly lessen vehicle weight.

In addition, the company will launch in North American the Ultramid ENDURE line of plastics; so highly heat-resistant it can take the place of metal parts in automotive engines, reducing both weight and cost.

Another innovation is their material-and-weight-saving thermoplastic seat back frame, jointly developed with Faurecia, which integrates the seat frame and back panel into a single structure reducing the need for foam and simplifying the trim process.

BASF’s ULTRASIM, a Computer Aided Engineering tool helps automotive client companies create virtual prototypes utilizing optimal multiple material design that results in finished components at marked weight and cost reductions.

The company also supplies HED cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which offering higher energy density, safety and efficiency to meet the continually evolving battery systems in automotive drivetrains. In addition, BASF offers tailor-made electrolytes to the lithium battery industry.

BASF can give manufacturers a comprehensive set of innovative catalyst technologies to encapable the efficient compliance with ever tightening emission regulations, such as LEV III.

Their automotive coatings portfolio, which includes brand new release car coatings as well as automotive refinish coatings for the repair industry, is another of their lines. BASF’s modern paint processes combined with special effect pigments and technologies, result in a full-breadth of color solutions and development capabilities.

Also showcased with be a collection of BASF Polyurethane Solutions useful in countless automotive applications and components. From lightweight car body components, instrument panels, seating foam, consoles, headrests and load floors, to even their soft touch Elastoskin on the doors, BASF has a product for nearly every aspect of the modern automobile. For example, they give Cellasto Microcellular Elastomers for sound dampening and Elastollan Thermoplastic Polyurethanes for door handles.

Though not a direct supplier to the public, it is interesting to see the materials that will likely become part of the next generation of cars as well as products sure to be part of the ongoing process of lightening the American vehicle.

Strong sales for 2011 Leaf and Volt shows bright promise rather than dismal flop

January 05, 2012 By: athony Category: Automobiles

n/a

Are the electric cars from Nissan, GM and Tesla a flop or a success? With the first year of sales figures from Nissan and GM in our hands we have more data with which to ponder what this means for the future of transportation. Viewing this experiment as a success or failure depends on ones point of view, your expectations, and perhaps whether you own millions of dollars in oil company stocks.

The last part of 2011 showed strong sales growth for the Chevy Volt (723 in September, 1,108 in October, 1,139 in November and 1,529 in December), while Nissan Leaf sales were lackluster (1,031 in September, 849 in October, 672 in November, and 954 in December). For the year the GM sold 7,671 Chevy Volt’s to the 9,674 Leaf’s sold by Nissan. This makes a total of 17,354 electric cars sold by Nissan and GM, in the U.S.A., in 2011, with other automakers such as Tesla selling several hundred more electric cars.

For comparison, MotorTrend reports GM’s total sales for 2011 were 2,503,820 vehicles. There were 415,130 Silverado pickup trucks sold in 2011, and 231,732 Chevy Cruze cars sold in 2011, and the list of vehicles sold by GM goes on and on. Compare these numbers to the 18,000 or so total electric car sales in 2011, or the Chevy Cruze, with 16,675 sales in December alone, you could rightfully think electric cars are a flop, kill the program, and lets move on to something more attractive. Indeed, you can find reports quoting many people making this exact argument. Electric car sales are a drop in the bucket, they’re not making any impact, we’re wasting our money on this stuff, on and on.

That is one perspective, but hardly the only, from which to view the facts. What about year-on-year sales growth, a figure many analysts like to look at. The problem here is that in 2010 the only electric cars being sold was the Tesla Roadster, conversion electric cars from a handful of conversion shops, and the few Leaf’s and Volts delivered in late 2010. This means perhaps 500 electric cars were sold in the U.S. in 2010, giving us a 35x sales jump from 2010 to 2011. If reported this way, the headline would scream about a 3469% sales increase. But this would be just as misleading, because of the discontinuous jump in the number of availcapable electric cars, as it is misleading to compare Volt sales to Cruze sales, an exercise many are doing (such as Rep. Kelly; see Why is an oil stock owning Congress member pushing to end EV tax credits?).

Just because we have no grounds for for a valid comparison between 2010 to 2010 electric car sales doesn’t mean we must be ignore the 35x (or so) sales jump. Instead we have a concrete demonstration we are in a brand new release era of transportation, an era where for the first time large numbers of modern electric cars are widely availcapable with promises of increasing production numbers as well as more electric car models from more manufacturers. (see A look at the electric cars coming in 2012 and A look at the plug-in hybrid cars coming in 2012)

One year from now we’ll be capable to compare 2011 electric car sales to 2012 electric car sales, and if predictions hold out we can rightly be excited over real serious sales growth. Both Nissan and GM expect to dramatically increase production of the Leaf and Volt, and those cars will be joined by the Ford Focus Electric, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the Tesla Model S, the Toyota RAV4 EV, the Scion iQ EV, the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive, and the Honda Fit EV as well as several plug-in Hybrids such as the Ford C-MAX Energi and Toyota Prius Plug-in.

From this perspective, 2011 laid the ground work for a large expansion to come for electric car sales in 2012. The 2011 sales demonstrated the need for electric car charging infrastructure, showed us there are people ready and willing to buy electric cars, showed that modern electric cars can fit into traffic with the rest of the vehicle fleet. It even showed that in the face of a seriously overhyped overblown rhetoric on Chevy Volt safety in the wake of a battery fire, that the customers not only kept buying Volt’s, but that sales jumped dramatically in November and December.

It’s all well and good to say 2011 laid the ground-work, but is there a concrete measure with which to judge electric car sales? Some want us to compare the Volt to the Chevy Cruze saying that the Volt is nothing more than the Cruze with a different drive train and a higher price. That may be, but does that make it a valid comparison? It is valid to compare sales between two similar gasoline Strengthed cars, but is it valid to compare sales between a gasoline car and a plug-in hybrid (a.k.a. extended range EV) like the Chevy Volt? No, they’re very different cars under the hood, they live in different price ranges, and there are many extra considerations an electric car purchaser must address before buying.

A better comparison might be between the introduction of hybrid cars in the U.S. in 1999, and the introduction of modern electric cars in the U.S. in 2011. In both years saw the introduction of a brand new release sort of vehicle that hadn’t been seen before on a mass scale. In 1999 with the introduction of the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius, we were introduced to the hybrid car, which 12 years later now comes in a dozen or more models from the various automakers. In 2011 with the introduction of the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt (as well as the existence of the Tesla Roadster), we were introduced to the modern electric car, and presumably in 10 years or so there will be a couple dozen models from the various automakers.

North American sales of the Toyota Prius was (according to the Wikipedia’s page on the Prius) 5,600 in 2000, 15,600 in 2001, 20,100 in 2002, 24,600 in 2003, and then in 2004 sales began to take off with 55,900 followed by 109,900 in 2005. The original model Insight introduced by Honda the same year never saw the same sort of sales growth, selling only 14,288 units between December 1999 and Feb 2009 when the second generation Insight was launched. Today, in early Jan 2012, we just finished the first year of modern electric car sales, and with upwards of 17,354 total electric cars sold in 2011 that is over 3 times the sales of hybrid cars in 2000, their first year of sales.

Are electric cars a flop? Many voices in todays politics and media want us to believe they are, and have constructed evidence to make us think they’re a flop. Is their perspective the only valid one from which to interpret reality? Hardly. It may be too early to render a final verdict on the success or failure of electric vehicles. The initial results look positive, however.

About the reporter: After 22 years in Silicon Valley’s software industry David Herron is now writing about green transportation (electric vehicles) from Silicon Valley. He also runs the popular electric vehicle discussion forum, visforvoltage.org, and is the author of the book “Node Web Development”.

10 best used cars for less than $8,000

January 05, 2012 By: athony Category: Automobiles

n/a

Someone I know was telling me yesterday about their car shopping experience with a girlfriend. Their friend told the salesman she only had $5,000 to spend, and he responded, “Come over here and look at the cars on death row.” When asked why he called them that, he told they were all ready to fall apart. Ouch. Of course, there are relicapable used cars out there, but knowing which ones to look for can be difficult. That’s why the editors at Kelley Blue Book (KBB) have put together a list of their top ten picks.

“We first compiled all the used cars 2002 and brand new releaseer with a Kelley Blue Book ® Retail Value of less than $8,000 as of December 2011,” told Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “We then went through the list and handpicked the 10 used cars with the most appealing mixes of reliability, versatility and desirability, with an emphasis on track record. The vehicles on our short list offer incredible value for today’s budget-conscious car shopper.”

While there’s no guarantee that a given vehicle is availcapable in your area at the price KBB suggests, with ten to choose from, your odds are good. Here are their choices:

10. 2008 Kia Rio for $7,895
The editors note that it’s the brand new releaseest vehicle they picked, which means it’s still under factory warranty. If you’re looking for a relicapable subcompact, it might be just right for you.

9. 2004 Ford Crown Victoria for $7,970
At the opposite end of the scale from the Kia Rio is Ford’s discontinued Crown Victoria sedan. There’s a reason so many police cars have been Crown Vics. Grab one before they become a collector’s item.

8. 2003 Mazda Protege5 for $7,360
KBB’s editors say this five-door wagon makes a good daily driver, with good gas mileage, and is fun to drive to boot.

7. 2002 Toyota Tundra Standard Cab for $5,925
If you need a full-sized pickup truck, this one’s rugged and relicapable, and, as a bonus, handles well. According to KBB, “With its smooth and durcapable V8 engine, a used Tundra will return thousands of sure-footed miles.”

6. 2003 Ford Escape for $7,560
The SUV on the list, the Escape is relatively compact, making it easy to drive, while still having lots of cargo space. No wonder it’s so popular.

5. 2004 Scion xA for $7,805
An economy car, the xA handles well and is comfortcapable. Look around for one that has the options you want, and you could get a very good deal indeed.

4. 2004 Pontiac Vibe for $7,630
This compact wagon is comfortcapable, gets good mileage, and has room for passengers and cargo. Sure, it’s not a status-boosting SUV, but it gets the job done at a reasoncapable price.

3. 2002 Toyota Corolla for $6,125
KBB’s editors say the Corolla is what it’s always been, good value, relicapable and comfortcapable. The price is good, too.

2. 2002 Infiniti G20 for $5,965
An upscale version of the Sentra, KBB’s editors note that it’s likely to have more features than similar-sized cars for the same price. Their caveat? You may have trouble finding one.

1. 2004 Honda Civic for $7,970.
This compact sedan has a reputation for quality and reliability, while still being fun to drive. KBB’s editors say that, “If you have 24 hours and $8,000 to acquire some brand new release wheels, just go buy the nearest used Civic and you’re likely to enjoy many years of trouble-free transportation. Sure beats shopping on death row.

The Ford F Series Pickup tops the 20 bestselling vehicles in 2011

January 05, 2012 By: athony Category: Automobiles

n/a

Even though we are constantly plagued by the idiots who insist that rising fuel prices will crush the American truck segment as a whole, we see that once again that the two bestselling models in the US are full size trucks. The Ford F Series won by a very comfortcapable margin with 584,917 trucks sold compared to just 415,130 examples of the Chevy Silverado sold last year – a gap of almost 170,000 units. The Toyota Camry fought through a massive shot to its reputation via the unintended acceleration lawsuits to once again finish third with 308,510 sedans sold, making the Camry the bestselling car in America once again. The Nissan Altima was fourth in sales in 2011 with 268,981 sedan and coupes sold after finishing just 7th in total sales in 2010 while the Ford Escape proved to be America’s bestselling sport utility vehicle in 2011, showing up in 5th place on this year’s list with 254,293 units sold. Also, like the murmurs that the sport utility vehicle is fading away, the Escape jumped from 13th place in 2010 to 5th place in 2011 – making it the bestselling SUV in all the land.

Overall, General Motors had the most vehicles on the list of the top 20 bestselling vehicles in 2011 with six vehicles on the list – three cars, two trucks, and one SUV. Ford was second overall with four vehicles out of the top 20 with two trucks, one car and one SUV in addition to having the bestselling truck, SUV and, of course, the claim of having the nation’s bestselling vehicle. Honda had a rough year but still managed 3 of the top 20 bestselling vehicles in American with two cars and one SUV although all three of their vehicles on the list dropped on the list compared to 2010 sales. Japanese counterpart Toyota managed just two of the top 20 vehicles – although Toyota gets to take home the title of the bestselling car in America.

Korean automaker Hyundai saw their Elantra and Sonata return to the top 20 list for 2011 but both of these models increased from where they appeared on the list in 2010. Finally, Nissan, Volkswagen and the Chrysler Group each had had one representative on the list with a pair of cars from Nissan and VW while the Chrysler Group saw their Ram pickup move up two spots from where the Ram finished in 2010. Names not on the list for 2011 that were included on the 2010 list of top movers are the Toyota Prius and the Subaru Legacy – both of which can look to the impact of the Japanese disasters earlier this year as well as increased competition for the cause of their dropping out of the top 20 selling models in America.

Below is the complete list of the top 20 bestselling models in America for the 2011 model year. The number and parenthesis is the 2010 rank for the given vehicle. Congradulations to Ford Motor Company for once again offering the bestselling vehicle in America!

1 Ford F-Series Truck 584,917 (1)
2 Chevrolet Silverado Truck 415,130 (2)
