Basically I got a ticket while about to move to a new state but since I moved, I got the ticket in the mail after it was due. Tried to pay it but it got kicked back to me. Then I got a notice saying my license would be suspended. I don’t have that license anymore and already got my license in my new state. Is there a way to trace this back? Will my new license be suspended if the one they are trying to suspend doesn’t even exist anymore? Hope this makes sense. It’s a crappy situation.

answer

Most states belong to what is know as the interstate compact, which shares details such as tickets, suspensions, restrictions, etc. I do not know which two states you are talking about, but if both states are part of the compact, you will get caught. Your ticket will follow you to the new state, and unless you pay the ticket and any fines, you will get your license suspended in your current state.

Generally, when you get a new license, you are supposed to surrender your old license, but I do not know if that is DMV policy or ‘law’ across all 50 states. I do know of people holding two state IDs from two different states, and as long as one is not committing fraud, there is nothing illegal going on (but neither are driver’s licenses).

You said you paid but it got kicked back to you? Insufficient funds? Tried to pay the reduced or original amount of the ticket but that time already expired? Paid via a method the court does not accept? You need to figure this out, why it happened and how to prevent it in the future.

You may have gotten a new license, did not surrender your old license (but if both states are part of the compact, your old license got invalidated anyhow), and there may be some lag before this all catches up with you.

Your best bet? Be accountable for your actions and take responsibility. Find out how to correctly pay your ticket. Pay it. Verify it gets paid.

conclusion:

Thanks for the responses. I don’t have 2 licenses. The ticket happened during the move. I surrendered my old license and that’s the one they are about to suspend. The kickback was because it was past due. I am paying everything before actually getting suspended. Just curious what people thought.
