Boat driving rules

We just bought an older boat Oregon I think and we know nothing about rules or how to drive one. Can someone give me some advice to what i need before i driving a BOAT..
answer: when I take people out and let them drive, I have 4 rules:

1, don’t hit anything
2, don’t hit anything
3, don’t hit anything
4, no drowning
basically know where your going, have a paper chart and know how to read it, a depth finder to know how much water you have and know how much you need, know the rules of the road and know how to read the markers. mapping GPS wont hurt but can be expensive. be aware of your surroundings, that goes for everyone on board, and you still need to watch out for guests as well as yourself, take several trips before you invite anyone out with you. check behind you like you would in your car every now and then. be respectful of other boaters. no wake means NO wake.
