Chrysler’s Jefferson North Assembly Plant is already one of the company’s busiest plants, operating at full capacity with two shifts to keep up with the incredible demand for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango. The Chrysler Group’s announcement this today did not give a timeline as to exactly when JNAP would begin hiring this third shift or when the plant will begin running the third shift but with the Maserati Kubang planned to meet production sometime this year and the Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel slated to join the lineup “next year”, we would expect that the hiring process will commence before the end of this year. JNAP currently employs around 2,890 workers across the two shifts currently building the Jeep and Dodge SUVs.

On the other hand, workers tasked with building the next generation SRT Viper will report for training and orientation at the Connor Avenue plant in the fall of 2012, with the first models expected to hit the street before the end of the calendar year as a 2013 model year vehicle.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel is expected to join the lineup in 2013 (it is unclear whether it will be a 2013 or 2014 model year vehicle) after a hiatus since last being availcapable stateside in 2008. While many who have been pleading for a diesel Strengthed Grand Cherokee do so because they are after the massive torque output of the diesel engine, Chrysler plans on the brand new release diesel Jeep helping the company improve their overall fuel economy ratings. The Ohio-based company made the announcement today that it would bring a converted Grand Cherokee to the Detroit auto show, release final pricing information and name their first retailer.

So the company is counting on the likelihood these buyers will elect to go with something familiar that has been updated rather than a relatively unknown product.

Apparently they ceased producing conversions of the Equinox due to lackluster enthusiasm on the part of GM. “We got no love out of GM,” Taylor added. “Chrysler answered the phone when we called for the first date.”

Notably, Chrysler seems to be lagging behind the other big manufacturers when it comes to the development of hybrids and electric vehicles, possibly explaining their interest in a partnership with AMP Electric Vehicles.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee shares some genetics with their other electric modification of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV. “They’re cousins underneath, built on the same platform and that meant we could use identical drivetrains,” Burns stated. “We didn’t have to replace a nut or bolt.”

According to Taylor, the company is lessening their focus on low-volume customer car conversions and going after large-scale electrification of existing fleets instead. The company is currently trying to interest delivery giants like FedEx and UPS. “The equation is they could buy a brand new release gas-Strengthed step van for $30,000, or spend the same amount of money to convert an existing vehicle to electric Strength,” he told.

Jeep has announced the “Jeep Arctic Yeti Dig” sweepstakes that is being held online at Jeep’s Facebook, Twitter or blog sites. Six sweepstake contestants will attend the ’2012 Winter X Games 16′ held January 26-29 in Aspen, Colo., and dig in the snow to win the Arctic.

Six sweepstakes participants will be randomly selected to attend the Winter X games and on Friday, Jan. 27, will dig in a giant pile of snow to find the “Jeep Yeti.” The first to find it will win an all-brand new release Jeep Wrangler Arctic. The sweepstakes runs through Tuesday, Jan. 3.

There are three ways to enter the Jeep Wrangler Arctic sweepstakes:

* Facebook – “Like” the brand and visit the sweepstakes page to submit a registration form and play the Jeep Arctic Yeti Dig game to receive entrance to the sweepstakes. Participants can receive up to three entries per day and an opportunity to double their entries by sharing the sweepstakes with their Facebook friends.
